I offer my sincere apology and condolences to the victims, their family members, and the Korean people for the Hwajeong exterior wall collapse accident in Gwangju.

HDC Hyundai Development Company took on its first project in 1976 with the development of Apgujeong-dong’s Hyundai Apartment, and grew into the IPARK brand thanks to the trust and love it gained from the Korean people. However, the two recent accidents in Gwangju caused immense disappointment to Gwangju citizens and the entire nation of Korea.

During the demolition process in June of last year, innocent citizens suffered injuries or even fatalities, and an additional accident took place on January 11th during the construction process. With not only the safety of the apartment at stake, but also the company’s credibility in disgrace, there are no words to fully express our apologies and devastation.

Without a doubt, a company’s value is nonexistent without the trust of its clients and the people. We will establish and fulfill all measures necessary to win back the trust of our clients and the people.

HDC Hyundai Development Company is currently implementing rescue operations while safely managing the scene of the accident through collaborative work by Gwangju City and affiliated government agencies. We will make full-scale attempts to swiftly rescue the missing victims.

Additionally, we will make damage compensations to the families of the accident victims, and make every effort in guaranteeing that no harm is done to prospective occupants and stakeholders.

The recent two accidents caused indescribable pain and a great disservice to Gwangju citizens. We will hold discussions with Gwangju City to find the best plan for the citizens’ safety and disaster management.

By turning over a new leaf after these accidents, HDC Hyundai Development Company will become reborn as a completely new company.

All measures will be taken so that the occupants of Hwajeong IPARK in Gwangju, the site of the accident, need not worry about safety. An external agency’s safety inspections will be implemented throughout the nation’s construction sites, and all safety and quality statuses will be thoroughly checked to dispel any form of concern or distrust.

The management of Hwajeong IPARK in Gwangju will be conducted with a focus on complete safety for its occupants. Safety examinations on national construction sites will be enforced by external agencies, and thorough inspections on safety and quality will be made to end the cycle of concern and mistrust.

We will intensify our safety and quality assurance so that our clients can feel at ease as they live out their whole lives in the apartment.

The current legal warranty period for structural faults such as framework is 10 years, but the warranty periods for newly opening houses and all other constructions of HDC Hyundai Development Company will be extended to 30 years for the occupants to live more comfortable lives. We will make sure to prevent any damages done to the occupants’ property due to safety matters.

HDC Hyundai Development Company will make its clients’ safety and social value its top priority and become reborn as a national company much loved by the people and a loyal contributor to economic development.

I was appointed as Chairman of HDC Hyundai Development Company in 1999 after coming here from Hyundai Motor Company, and for over 23 years, I made endeavors for the company’s development and strived to keep the clients’ and people’s trust. It breaks my heart to see the hard work accumulated over decades come to naught in a single moment due to these accidents.

By taking to heart the responsibility for these two accidents, I will resign from the Chairman position of HDC Hyundai Development Company as of today. I pledge to offer all the efforts and support from the Group level to manage the accidents and regain the people’s trust.

I once again offer my sincere apology and condolences to the victims of the Gwangju accidents and the Korean people.
